The Spanish clarinetist Antonio Romero y Andia (1815 - 1886) began the study of his instrument when quite young, and made a notable debut in his native Madrid at the age of fourteen. He would be a solo clarinetist for many years, as well as music director of the Royal Court Orchestra and various regimental bands of the Royal Guard. In addition, from 1849 to 1876 Romero served as professor at the Madrid Conservatory (also teaching oboe for a time). The highly-regarded artist reaped numerous honors and awards.

Though Romero was also known as a composer, his Complete Clarinet Method was of particular importance: with it he was responsible for the spread of the Böhm system throughout Spain. He also invented the Romero System in an attempt to improve various problems of acoustic and fingering technique, a system that did not receive wide acceptance.

In 1854 Romero opened an instrument shop in Madrid, and two years later he founded a music publishing house that would soon become one of the most important in Spain.

The present edition of the enjoyable and thoroughly virtuosic recital piece for clarinet and piano entitled Primer Solo Original stems from the composer’s own first publication of 1856 (plate no. A. R. 3059), which also appeared in a version for oboe.
