Little is known about Heinrich Neumann (1792 - 1861). He was both a clarinetist and composer, and particularly a conductor of various court and military ensembles. The stations of his creative life included Frankfurt and Paderborn, Prince Leopold II's Detmold Court Orchestra from 1823 until 1829, and finally Cologne and Antwerp.

Among the works that have been preserved, Neumann's music for winds, especially that for clarinet, stands at the core of his compositional output.

The Trio, Op. 40, presented here was published around 1830 by F. J. Mompour, Bonn. This new edition may help lend it recognition and a deserved place in the repertory for the charming, but hardly common instrumental grouping.

With its 4 movements (Allegro moderato; Scherzando. Allegro assai; Larghetto. Legato; Finale. Allegro Presto) the work's formal structure stands directly in the classical tradition of its time, and it also displays a winning combination of joyful musical inspiration and a contrapuntal technique that meshes gratefully with the instruments' capabilities.
